New Work and Literary Policy
Our
approach to theatre making involves an accessible aesthetic. The “Graeae Aesthetic” embeds elements of accessible
communication within a play, including: on stage sign language interpreters, use of film or recorded sound, captioning, power
point projections, or audio description.
Graeae’s New Work and
Literary remit includes:
* Commissioning
new plays from Deaf, disabled, and non-disabled writers
* Plays
adapted from a wide spectrum of media, including: novels, poetry, and film
* Radical
adaptations of extant plays that apply the Graeae Aesthetic
* Profiling
new and emerging disabled writers
Key New
Work and Literary aims for the next five years:
* Increase
the annual number of new commissions
* Explore innovative and accessible
approaches to playmaking
* Increase the profile, status and
success of Graeae’s commitment to new work and writing
* Support
a relationship between Graeae’s new writing activity and outreach work
connected to touring productions
New Work and Literary
Programmes:
Commissioning Programme - we commission at least two
writers per year, both established and emerging, to increase the number of
scripts available to Graeae
Write Stuff - an annual script reading
programme
Play Labs - an opportunity to explore
ideas and/or to respond to new artistic stimuli. This one-day research and
development platform has been created for disabled artists. Play labs give
these performers, writers, or directors space to study specific aesthetic
questions relative to their work
