Writing Radio Drama

A Residency for Disabled Writers

Graeae has been working with BBC Radio in a search for talented writers with an original and entertaining voice. In March 2008, eight disabled writers took part in an expenses-paid, week-long residency on writing audio drama.

The event, funded by the Arvon Foundation, has been a great success. All eight writers have been invited to attend a Master Class at the BBC and have been invited to submit new work.

The BBC is really showing commitment to inclusion and this is obviously very positive news for disabled writers.

In June, Graeae ran its first research and development day following the project and brought in the help of 3 strong writers, Mike Kenny, Paul Sirrett and Duncan MacMillan. The workshop looked at how Graeae fuses both art and access in all levels of its work.

Graeae's new writing team was interested in gaining a better understanding of how writers can participate in this process and how Graeae's approach to access can be spread widely throughout the industry.
