A New Home for Graeae!

Hackney Omnibus Site

Graeae has been awarded £1.78 million by Arts Council England through the Lottery Programme to develop a groundbreaking workspace in East London.

The new offices, which will also house a state-of-the-art rehearsal space, have access at the core of the design. This is the first of its kind in the UK and continues Graeae’s role as a force for change in disabled theatre and in progressing mainstream theatre.

Graeae has been working with Artillery Architecture and Interior Design, to convert the former tram-sheds on Kingsland Road in Hackney into a building which will be a visible model of inclusive creative practice.

Everything has been informed by Graeae's unique approach to creative access: from tactile flooring to sensitive heating systems, acoustics and scented trees to adaptable work services and bright stylish WCs. The space has an urban yet off-beat feel and is a world away from the institutional buildings often associated with disabled people.

Graeae will be posting news about the project as and when we get it.

Fundraising
We are currently fundraising for the additional £350k needed to fit out the space. From artwork to accessible doors or from our sprung floor to a toilet roll holder, every item will take us a step closer to our target.

Our thanks go to John Ellerman Foundation, Equity Trust Fund, Coutts, Hackney Parochial Charities, Goldsmiths' Company Charity, Camelot Foundation and to all those that donated on the fundraising  evening in May.
